In May 2014, Jan Hartwig became head chef at Restaurant ATELIER in the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich. The restaurant was awarded two Michelin stars in 2015 and three Michelin stars from 2017 until his departure. Until leaving Restaurant ATELIER in 2021, Jan Hartwig was one of only ten three-star chefs in Germany.
After his apprenticeship at Restaurant Dannenfeld in Braunschweig, he cooked at "Pomp Duck and Circumstance". In 2005, he moved to the two-star restaurant Kastell under the direction of Christian Jürgens in Wernberg-Köblitz. This was followed by a stint in 2006 at the later three-star restaurant GästeHaus Klaus Erfort in Saarbrücken and from 2007 at the three-star restaurant Aqua with Sven Elverfeld in Wolfsburg, where he became sous chef in 2009.
