Nesmuk Handle Materials
Handles for chef's knives, slicers,
utility knives and bread knives
Bog oak
Bog oak is not a separate type of wood: in fact, it refers to subfossil oak trunks, up to 5,000 years old, that have lain in North German bogs and waters. When such a trunk is found and salvaged in a bog, it must first be dried in an elaborate drying process that takes several years before it can be processed. The color varies between brownish and bluish-black tones.
Olive
Olive wood is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful woods. Nesmuk exclusively uses hand-picked pieces of wild-grown olive wood from a specific region in Spain – with a particularly spectacular grain, light brown to golden yellow, wildly figured with dark stripes. The handles are deliberately not polished to preserve the pleasant soft feel of the olive wood.
Karelian curly birch
Karelian curly birch is a small birch species native to Northern Europe, predominantly in the border region between Finland and Russia. Due to its slow growth, the light grey to light brown wood exhibits a strong, high-contrast grain. Karelian curly birch is a typical knife handle for traditional Scandinavian knives and is unmistakable due to its very striking grain.
Micarta Black
Micarta is a high-tech plastic, whose characteristic grain is created by dyed linen. Micarta is a shock-resistant, hard, and shatterproof material, and is also resistant to moisture, acids, and alkalis, which is why it is a handle material frequently chosen by professional chefs in particular.
Micarta Green

Micarta Red

Juniper
Juniper is characterized by its fine grain and characteristic scent. The wood is light, yet durable, and impresses with its warm, light coloring and individual structures. Each handle is unique.
Desert Ironwood
Desert Ironwood comes from the Sonoran Desert in the USA and Mexico and is up to 1500 years old.
It is very hard and has a higher density than water. After processing, it shimmers in brown-reddish hues.
Walnut
Walnut burl, in the quality selected by Nesmuk, is one of the rarest and most expensive European woods. True walnut is predominantly found in Central and Southern Europe. Even the heartwood is a coveted noble wood, but even more beautiful is the valuable wood of the rare burl nodules: very heavy and hard, walnut burl is characterized by its fine dark to golden-brown grain.

Folders
Silver Hammered
Hammered silver is elaborately handcrafted using the traditional martelé technique: The fine hammered finish of the solid 925 sterling silver increases the surface area and thus the reflections of light, making the silver shine even more. All Nesmuk folders are completely and exclusively crafted and finished by trained goldsmiths.
Black Jade
Black jade enjoys a special status among gemstones, as it has a cultural and art historical significance unlike any other stone worldwide; particularly in China, where black jade is considered the stone of the gods. Jade is formed by volcanic processes and is not only one of the rarest and most expensive gemstones, but also extremely hard and difficult to work with. Nesmuk processes only hand-selected stones of the highest quality.
Lapis Lazuli
Lapis lazuli is a mineral mixture that formed under high pressure and temperature in various rocks, such as marble. Due to its rarity and unique appearance, the blue-gold shimmering stone has been one of the most coveted gemstones for over 5,000 years and is found in numerous important works of art history, such as the famous death mask of Tutankhamun.
Black Curly Birch
Curly birch is a small birch species native to Northern Europe. Due to its slow growth, the light grey to light brown wood shows a strong, high-contrast grain. Since it is also very soft and open-pored, Nesmuk processes stabilized curly birch: liquid, colored acrylic glass is drawn into the gaps of the wood under vacuum, making it very break-resistant and hard.

Tiger Iron
Tiger Iron is a combination of tiger's eye, hematite, and red jasper. These different minerals create the unique silver-gray and red-yellow stripes; at the same time, due to the different properties of its various components, Tiger Iron is very difficult to work with and requires a lot of experience and care.
Desert Ironwood
Desert Ironwood comes from the Sonoran Desert in the USA and Mexico, where it is one of the longest-lived tree species, reaching up to 1,500 years old. The tree is strictly protected, and only small quantities of wood from naturally fallen trees are available. It is one of the densest, heaviest, and hardest woods in the world and requires elaborate and demanding processing.
